Personal History:
A woman in a male dominated world of cultivators.
Woe to Qingheng Jun and Madam Lan as Gusu welcomed two girls from their sect leader, so alike were they that they had been nicknamed the Twin Jades; not only do their beauty earn the the nicknames but both have worked tirelessly to be shining examples of cultivators of their generations, training harder than anyone else. It was lucky that they had been born into the Gusu Lan Sect as neither girls were ever in negotiations for an arranged marriage; a stance that her uncle, Lan Qiren, had been adamant about. He had made it known that the Gusu Lan Sect had a female sect leader who needn't a husband. When Qingheng Jun passed, Lan Xichen had stepped into the role as Sect Leader, just as Lan Yi, the first female sect leader, had so many generations ago.
Lan Wangji had never seen herself as someone that got along very well with her peers, even within the sect, choosing to turn to her studies and her training instead. Her elder sister encouraged her to make friends her own age, citing that the upcoming lessons with students coming from other sects would be a good opportunity.
During this study, the heirs form the Yunmeng Jiang sect, the Lady Jiang Yanli and the Lady Jiang Wanyin came with their First Disciple Sect Brother Wei Wuxian. Of whom, Lan Wangji met for the first time when she caught him breaking wards and sneaking alcohol into the Cloud Recesses.
Much of the story progresses as it did in canon.
When Lan Wangji ventured out to find the source of the Stygian Tiger Amulet on her own, Lan Qiren worried for her safety as a woman traveling on her own. When Wei Wuxian caught up with her, he mentioned it at first then admitted that he thought she would be bored without him and that he was the one that truly needed protection on this quest.
During the Wen attack on the Cloud Recesses, Lan Qiren feared the worst for his nieces - with Lan Xichen on the run on her own, she could put herself in danger if she were caught; with Lan Wangji being cornered and facing the Wen on her own, he could only assume the worst that they could do to her after they broke her leg. During the indoctrination in Qishan, Lan Wangji stubbornly refused help from Wei Wuxian despite her leg being broken during the burning of the Cloud Recesses. When they faced the Tortoise of Slaughter, her view of him changed during those days trapped in the cave in the aftermath and learning more about each other. Before he passed out from the blood loss, she recognized the deep affection and care that began to grow within her for him.
She fought as hard as the other cultivators during the Sunshot Campaign, being reunited with her sister, who was unharmed, and even Wei Wuxian, who had disappeared for months. When Wei Wuxian blacked out from using his demonic cultivation, she appeared at his bedside every day to play songs of clarity for him to heal him. Lan Wangji had asked her sister if she could bring someone back to the Cloud Recesses. To which, Lan Xichen gently asked if "he" would be willing. Lan Wangji had no answer.
Just as in canon, Lan Wangji lost Wei Wuxian at Nightless City and received severe punishment for it and for bringing a fatherless child back to the Cloud Recesses: four hundred strikes for aligning herself with the devil and for the assumed parentage of the fevered child she brought back to Gusu. Four hundred lashes that would scar over and criss cross across her back.
Had the Yiling Laozu defiled the Second Jade? Did she carry his bastard without anyone knowing? Who is this child?
Lan Wangji did not waver from her belief in Wei Wuxian after his death and had insisted on raising a-Yuan as her own after her time in seclusion in the Cold Pond Cave. Each night for sixteen years, she played Inquiry in hopes that she would find him. Each night, there was no answer.
There was a call to Mo Village, the home of Mo Xuanyu, to take care of a disturbance at Mo Manor. Lan Wangji took her adopted son, now a junior disciple, and a few others to go investigate the issue.
Personality:
Lan Wangji grew up under the strict rules of her clan. Along with this strict moral code, she also has a strong sense of justice, wanting to set things right in the world. As she explores the world outside of her home, her sense is strong enough to make her question the thousands of precepts and, if a rule goes against justice completely, makes the decision to break the rule. She has no want for fame or glory, instead preferring to go wherever help is needed.
She doesn't say much and she has a tendency to be incredibly reserved to the point where her elder sister implores and highly encourages her to make friends her own age when the other sects arrive at the Cloud Recesses to study. Lan Wangji also expresses herself with microexpressions that, unless someone had taken the time to learn and study each one, would not be obvious to the passing eye.
While her outward demeanor is very cold and ineffable, Lan Wangji feels deeply. With her mother's passing, she continued to go to the Jingshi and kneel in the snow, waiting for someone to open the door for the woman she loved very much and was excited to see once a month. When Wei Wuxian passed, Lan Wangji went through a period of grief in her seclusion, barely saying a word to anyone, including her sister and her uncle.

Main Motivation:
Who is right? Who is wrong? What is black and what is white?
Skills:
Golden Core Cultivation
Lan Wangji has a golden core within her that is the source of her magical abilities that allow her to communicate and calm spirits and minds as well as transfer energy to another person as a means of healing them. She had spent her entire life learning to control and finesse it in order to utilize it with swords, talisman, and her spiritual weapon, a guqin.
Lan Wangji is able to create and use various talismans for things such as calming/dispelling spirits, repelling spirits, warding, and shielding. She does this by drawing talisman in the air with her spiritual energy or drawing the sigil itself on a piece of paper. The spiritual sigil can be pushed toward a target and execute the spell before dissipating. The paper version sticks to the target until the spell is complete.
Cultivator physiology (Swordsmanship / martial arts)
Lan Wangji is a master of the Gusu Lan Sect's style of sword and unarmed martial arts, which includes non-spiritual sword play, "riding the sword" (standing on the blade as a means of transportation between one place to another), and using it as a cultivation tool with the spiritual energy of the sword by being able to summon it telepathically and using it as an offensive strike from a distance.
She is also trained in unarmed combat, becoming proficient in it as a means of a last effort of self defense if she is unable to summon her sword or use talismans. She has trained his body hard in the Lan Sect's style of unarmed combat and is able to leap over a fair distance, such as from the roof to the ground in an easy leap. She is light on her feet with this style and quick to move.
Magical Musicality
Lan Wangji is incredibly skilled in using a guqin, a stringed musical instrument that she is able to summon at will. She uses this to communicate with spirits by playing specific songs in a language called Qin. The spirits are able to recognize this language and respond using various notes through the guqin as well. Spirits are unable to lie when this method of communication is used. The instrument can also be used to calm living peoples using the Song of Clarity.
